The challenge
Most people don't have a spending problem so much as a visibility problem. Money comes in and goes out across cash, savings and mobile money, and by the end of the month it's hard to say where it went. Budgeting apps promise to fix this, but most are built for markets with bank feeds and card-only spending. They assume every transaction syncs automatically, they're often locked to one currency, and they ask users to download a heavy native app before seeing any value.
That doesn't fit how many professionals in East Africa actually manage money. A lot of everyday spending happens in cash and mobile money, which no bank feed captures. Users want something that works on the phone they already have, opens instantly, keeps working on a weak connection, and gives a clear, honest picture without hype.
EMPIIHA's goal was to be a premium financial command centre, not another basic budgeting app. It would bring income, spending, savings, budgets and goals into one place and turn them into insight people can act on.
The approach
NASDAN started from how people actually track money, not how bank-integrated apps assume they do. Discovery produced four principles:
- The ledger is the source of truth. Balances are never typed in. They're always calculated from transactions, so what users see is always consistent with what they recorded.
- Honest insights, not black-box predictions. Guidance comes from transparent rules applied to the user's own data, such as savings rate, month-on-month trends and budget risk. Every insight can be explained.
- App-quality experience without an app store. A Progressive Web App gives a fast, installable, native-like experience with offline support, and nothing to download first.
- Built for local currencies. Multi-currency support from day one, including UGX, KES and NGN, so the app feels local wherever it's used.
The solution
NASDAN designed and built the full product: a public marketing site and the signed-in app, sharing one visual language.
- 01 · Wallets. Cash and savings wallets, with balances always derived from the transaction ledger, so totals stay accurate after every entry, edit or deletion.
- 02 · Transactions. Income, expenses and transfers between wallets, with categories, subcategories, colour and emoji labels, recurring flags and notes. Users can filter by type, wallet, category, label, date or keyword.
- 03 · Smart budgets. Weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly budgets, either per category or overall, with live spent, remaining and percentage figures and alerts before overspending.
- 04 · Analytics. Income, expense and savings trends, category and wallet breakdowns, and a daily spending heatmap that shows when money actually leaves.
- 05 · Insights engine and Financial Health Score. A rules engine checks the user's savings rate against a 20% target, applies the 50/30/20 rule, flags category spending spikes and budgets at risk, detects improving cash flow, and rolls it all into a 0–100 Financial Health Score.
- 06 · Dashboard. Total balance, period income, spending and savings, recent transactions, top categories, active budgets, a six-month cash-flow chart and an insights preview, all on one screen.
- 07 · Installable PWA. Users can add EMPIIHA to their home screen and use it full-screen, with offline fallback and careful handling of notches and navigation bars across iOS and Android.
- 08 · "Kinetic Obsidian" design system. A custom dark-first glass-and-glow interface in signature mint green, with a full light mode. Interface text uses Inter. Every money figure uses Geist Mono, so numbers are always precise and easy to scan.
The results & impact
EMPIIHA is live and free to use, with a public demo anyone can try without signing up. Users can go from sign-up to their first recorded transaction in moments, because every new account starts with a ready-made Cash Wallet. From there, each entry feeds the budgets, analytics and insights automatically.
The result is a personal finance tool that treats cash, savings and local currencies as normal, works like a native app without an app store, and gives users a clear, explainable picture of their financial health.
"Most budgeting apps assume your money lives in a bank feed. EMPIIHA starts from where money actually moves, and makes it understandable."
— Daniel Nasasira, NASDAN
Why it matters
- Built for how money really moves. Manual-first tracking covers cash and other spending that bank-integrated apps miss.
- Trustworthy by design. Ledger-derived balances and rules-based insights mean every number and recommendation can be explained.
- App quality, web reach. An installable PWA delivers a native feel with none of the friction of an app download.
